Camping and ATVs commision consider to repeal of both ordinances

Chair Vanessa Carusone has arranged the two ordinances repeal to come before the North Port City Commision have special meeting on Wednesday at 6p.m. The one ordinance regulates camping within city limits, the other regulates use of all-terrain vehicles.

The ATV ordinance prohibits the operation of off-road vehicles, motorcycles and ATVs on private property unless the rider has written permission from the land-owner. The other ordinance for camping has similar provision.

Carusone supports repeal of both ordinances, “not for some of the reasons why people may believe — not because I am an ATV rider, but because it is bad legislation. The ATV ordinance “has too many loopholes in it that prevent general private property rights. The ATV ordinance also prevents people from driving motorcycles on city streets.”

North Port resident Charline Cristofori, who lives in the Sumter Green gated community, says if the ATV ordinance is repealed, “An ATV will be coming to my neighborhood soon, or yours. You can call the police and these guys can take off into the woods.”

If the ordinance is repealed, ATV enthusiasts likely will ride on property without the owners’ permission, Cristofori said, adding that absentee property owners have rights.

Carusone was the lone dissenter on both votes. She was vice president of the North Port Off Road Association when the votes were held, and she resigned that position after the vote.
