Camping in public piers at Donner Lake could be banned

This coming summer, The Truckee Donner Recreation and Park District plans to banned overnight camping on Donner Lake public piers.

Peter Werbel, board secretary said “It was a very difficult decision. Those who voted against thought it was a good place for kids to hang out, and there has never been a huge outcry of people abusing it, who voted for the ordinance. But those voting for it thought other people feel they can’t use the piers when people are camping on them.”

Steve Randall, General Manager said the board set a partial/tentative from 11 pm to 5 am, but are still finding the exact times. He said “Last summer there were some people camping for a couple days that made the piers rest of the public not usable.”

Overall camping on the public piers has been a small problem on holidays like the July 4.

Werbel said “I’m hoping that if it does become an ordinance police will look at the intent of the law rather than strictly enforcing it.”

On March 12 will do a second reading and if passed then it would be presented to Truckee Town Council for results or decision.
