Boy Scouts Enjoy Camping Weekend

The 2008 weekend theme was “Wheels”. Boys scouts enjoy weekend of camping fun, it was the fourth year in a row local radio enthusiast have joined in the Scouth gatherings, knowledge on building and operating ham radio equipment. To earn a special events or radio badge as setting the state for Scouts.

The volunteers from the local racing community helped with a NASCAR style competition to stop on Friday. Then, on Saturday, community fire and police departments presented a vehicle rescue demonstrations, and Sunday the Savannah Wheelman entertained with a bicycle show.

According to Norm Mundy, organizer “This has been a great event. Jamborees are held around the world on the third weekend in October and while we’ve moved around every year - from Richmond Hill to the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum - everywhere we go the community has stepped up to work with these young men. It’s a great experience in the life of every Boy Scout”.

The Coastal Empire Council of the Boy Scouts of America held a 3-day Camporee at the Oglethorpe Speedway Park in Pooler. Around 200-300 Scouts as far from Hinesville and Statesbro. Joining this camping to across the nation in the great outdoors, fellowship and learning activities in three days.

The 51st Jamboree on the Air (JODA). The local amateur radio operators helped to erect and man a communication center for the Jamboree on the Air. The Coastal Amateur Radio Club (CARS), members of the Amateur Radio Club (ARC) and non-affiliates where Scouts could talk to other jamborees around the world on a variety of shortwave from the latest Voice over Internet Technology to a 20-watt military man pack. The scouts could try their hand at making contact with the International Space Station that there was even a satellite uplink.
