Cold Weather kicks off camping season at Myakka State Park
The best place to pitch a tent and light a fire is Myakka River State Park location in Southwest Florida. A lot of people left on the state park, said Jim Cornell. Jim Cornell was packing up his gear. He and a buddy planned to stay an extra night but the temperature of 45 degree drove them away. A couple stayed one night and another stayed two nights.
In Florida, it is often too hot for camping but never too cold. Near Freezing Weather is an excuse for a bigger fire. Cornell said when he was got up early in the morning it was like “Dannng!”.
Here you can find the option three local and regional alternatives:
1. Peace River Campground in Arcadia. Have a tent sites and river beaches in “The Wilderness” area of the campground. There’s a something little traffic noise from the highways in Arcadia but no place is perfect. For more info visit peacerivercampground.com
2. Oscar Scherer State Park in Osprey. Something quiet tent and RV sites along South Creek. It’s okay for hiking and cycling paths along with a link to the Legacy Trail between Sarasota and Venice. The park is just off U.S. 41, it is convenient.
3. Highlands Hammock State Park in Sebring. The tent camping is in the boring part of the park but it’s a short trip to the boardwalk. Boardwalk through a cypress swamp. Rangers rave about full-moon walks at night.
Myakka Tents and Cabins
There’s a problem with Myakka River State Park is the location of the main campgrounds. they’re plopped down next to the main park road, instead of being set along the Myakka River or beside upper Lake Myakka.
The nearest one for hiking is a picturesque spot called Bee Island. But if you don’t want to rough it, the park cabins remain a great deal especially for groups of four or six people.
Reservations area tough to get during the peak season but you can always call them and ask about cancellations. That’s worked for me in the past.
Outpost
Myakka Outpost, the state park concession is finally getting ready to open its new building. Beside the lake perched on stilts and it looks perfect, old fashioned metal roof and wraparound porch.
The menu includes everything from fries and burgers to seafood gumbo and root beer floats. You might as well go camping when you drive out to Myakka River. The weather should be just right for a campfire.
